    The Mercedes-Benz G-Class G 4x4²: G-Class squadred to a new level

    Set to replace the existing 4. This Euro 6 compliant engine is planned to replace up to three existing Mercedes-Benz V8 units when it goes into full-time production later in Drive is channelled permanently to all four wheels by a reworked version of Mercedes' seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox, complete with a separate transfer case and the high and low-ratio gearing from the standard G There are also three mechanical differential locks that can be operated on the move.

    Official performance figures are yet to be confirmed. Key chassis tweaks are new dual-strut spring and damper units that bring adjustable damping control in two modes: Mercedes claims the new set-up provides considerable kingpin offset that has allowed a large disparity in damping characteristics with switch times of just 15 milliseconds.

    This is more than double that of the standard G, which offers mm of clearance. Mercedes also says the approach and departure angles have been increased from 36 and 27 degrees to a respective 52 and 54 degrees. The crucial breakover angle has also improved from 21 to 47 degrees, while wading depth is up from mm to mm and the tipping angle increases from 28 to 30 degrees. Further chassis changes centre around the width of the tracks. Also available are off-road biased Huchinson beadlock wheels.

    Mercedes has confirmed it has received more than orders for the G63 6x6. Originally created as a marketing exercise in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the G-Class, the hulking great four-wheel-drive Merc has far exceeded earlier sales expectations, with strong interest from the Middle East, Russia and the US.

Looks as if its ready to go Glacier bashing in Iceland 'out of the box' I just adore G-Wagen's, they are so gloriously out of step with current 'acceptable' conspicuous consumption, and sticks two fingers up at the green mob. It is also so over engineered that looked after they will last a lifetime. I have had several as company cars over the years and they instil so much confidence through their abilities and build quality that they become a member of the family right away, so much so that even with other cars available to use, you instinctively reach for the G-Wagen keys every time.

    Log in or register to post comments. Sure I'll be seeing some of these monsters about But there is plenty of wealthy people with madness for large 4x4's. It doesn't have a "wow" factor when compared to the 6x6 but it certainly will sell for the badge alone to those with that much money burning a hole in their pocket.

    Land Rover's Missed Opportunity. Every time I read about this, I think Land Rover could have done something similar with the Defender if they'd had the vision and the balls.
