None of us who have driven Ferrari's new Modena have come away disappointed. All have found various ways of saying the new car still stirs the soul. And after a day at the test track and several more days on twisting mountain roads, we have the numbers to translate that feeling into empirical data.

    That almost everything that makes up a is aluminum-from the space frame and sheetmetal to the shiny billet shifter lever-means a big difference in how the car feels on the road. It weighs pounds less than the F but actually gains torsional rigidity and bending resistance. And while it's a foot longer than the car it replaces-providing actual luggage space-it still ranks as one of the best-handling cars in the world.

    So with fewer pounds, and more horsepower, the ought to go faster than the , right? In some cases it does, but not in all. Our hangup in testing was the shifter. Our test car came with Ferrari's much-ballyhooed F1 paddle shifter, a unit similar to the one used by Michael Schumacher when he actually gets past the first turn in a race.

    As you may notice, when Schuey gets through that first turn, he usually goes on to do quite well. The F1 shifter in the street-going does quite well, too, the difference being that it does its best around a road course or over a twisting mountain two-lane, not on a drag strip. We drove it on both and were very happy with it when the turns came up fast and the road kept going.

    The F1 shifter snaps through gear changes up and down quickly and with very little wasted energy. This one is a little more refined-and the unit in the Spider is even more so-but still gives its all to getting the power to the rear wheels quickly. And it doesn't shift nearly as quickly as Schumacher's. Pull back on the left paddle to upshift and on the right paddle to go down. We could drive faster and more precisely with this than with the stick-shift we drove in Italy.

    But around town it was cumbersome, even in its automatic mode-like trying to teach a thoroughbred to do the milk route. And at the drag strip it was difficult to manage the 's power through the box. Simply flooring the throttle and steering straight didn't make for a quick time in the quarter-mile. The rear tires spun almost immediately, and when the engine hit redline the computer shut off the fuel flow.

    The result of this balancing act was a time of 4. Through our foot slalom the Ferrari behaved more as we expected. It was so quick at turn-in around the cones, its response so immediate, that it took several runs just to get used to a car this tight. Such performance doesn't come cheap, however. The new has several roles to fill. It must accommodate a wider variety of buyers and meet an increasingly different set of buyer needs.

    So this car is much more comfortable than any of the V8-powered Ferraris to date. The air conditioning works very nicely, for instance, and that added room behind the rear seat is meant for golf clubs though we'd surely forget all about that game with one of these in the garage. A day behind the wheel of a leaves you less exhausted than the F or , but no less inspired.
