Interesting fact! The Mitsubishi Group was established in Japan in 1870. And since then she has never changed her logo. Three well-known rhombuses symbolize three diamonds, "three whales", on which the whole concept of the concern rests: honesty, responsibility and readiness for cooperation.

The Lancer's four-cylinder is a bit more potent but the car's extra weight cancels the power boost. It was officially introduced at the January Detroit Motor Show and went on sale shortly afterward in March I've found the suspension to be a bit soft. But it has quite a bit of turbo lag and it needs to be revved high into its range to extract its power.

Most of those owners didn't expect many thrills from it, but we say it doesn't live up to its sporty-sounding name. Those owners like as we do the Lancer's tight chassis, quiet ride, comfortable interior and fit-and-finish.

However, there's nothing that conveys "rally" about this car, except that its maker is heavily involved in rallying. The only things different about this Rally Edition from the regular ES and LS Lancers are its cool OZ wheels wearing the standard all-season tires , badging, some not-so-cool body cladding and an optional rear deck spoiler.

We loved our nimble long-term Mirage. The Lancer, its replacement, is larger overall including a four-inch-longer wheelbase but not more exciting. It makes us think some Japanese automakers are feeling pressure from their Korean challengers. As one staffer noted, "This Lancer may be an attempt to address the 'Hyundai gave me a bigger car for less money' problem.

The Lancer's four-cylinder is a bit more potent but the car's extra weight cancels the power boost. To wring out maximum power, we've found the first step is to choose the five-speed manual version.

Then turn off the air conditioning, which soaks up a surprising amount of the engine's horsepower and lb-ft of torque. Because of the gearing, rev to redline in first or you're stuck with too little rpm when you shift into second to climb toward its torpm powerband. Torque tops out at rpm. You have to shift to third for the 0-tomph run, as the rev limiter cuts in at about 59 mph.

When you do unleash that power and attack a corner or the test slalom, those non-upgraded tires tend to scrub off speed. So add a tire swap to your shopping list. Comparing the Lancer's track and road performance to a couple of four-cylinder competitors we recently tested, the Honda Civic EX and Nissan Sentra SE, the Lancer doesn't fare well.

It trailed both those cars in every category in the Road Test Data chart above except for four: So the Lancer, a pleasant-riding, value-priced commuter, doesn't break any new ground. We're thrilled that Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution a true rally car offspring with plus horsepower is scheduled to debut here next January. The company needs it to help rejuvenate a lineup that lately has stirred little emotion. The car is quick, very precise in handling and acceleration and with brakes that make you drool.

The shifter is user-friendly with a short throw between gears. The Lancer will get up and move while the chassis displays little if any roll. As for the interior, my one-quart coffee mug won't fit in the cupholder. Yes, there's enough room in back for adults, but the roof angle does nothing to prohibit my six-foot-one-inch son and I from scuffing our head. Most importantly, the Scorpions sound simply fantastic pumping through the Mitsubishi sound system.

It may not be an Evo VII, but it is a well-built economy car that doesn't pretend to be anything else. Fit-and-finish is comparable to a Civic, while a inch wheelbase affords room to stretch out. Although a five-speed manual is preferred, mine is equipped with an automatic tranny for other family members sharing the car. A few more perks I would have liked include all-wheel drive, heated mirrors, five-lug wheels, four-wheel disc brakes and fog lamps.
